Carriage House Garage Door FAQs

Do carriage-style garage doors actually swing open?

No. They are built to look like swing-open doors, but they are sectional doors that roll up overhead on tracks like any standard garage door. You get the classic carriage house look while keeping your driveway clear and using a regular garage door opener.

How much maintenance does a wood carriage door need?

Wood needs more care than steel or fiberglass. Inspect the finish every year and repaint or restain when it starts to wear, especially on the bottom section and the side that gets the most sun. Keeping the finish sealed protects the wood from Michigan moisture and freeze-thaw cycles.

What affects the price of a Signature® Carriage door?

Size, design and finish are the main factors. A custom design usually costs more than one of the 16 standard designs, and windows, decorative hardware and your finish choice also change the price. Wood doors are often heavier than steel doors, so the springs and opener must be matched to the door.

Should I choose a paint or stain finish?

Choose stain if you want the natural wood grain to show, and paint if you want a solid color that matches your trim or siding. Both finishes are offered on the Signature® Carriage Collection. Our DoorView visualizer lets you compare looks before you decide.

Can I get a custom carriage door design?

Yes, custom designs are available in addition to the 16 standard designs. A custom door can match a unique home style or an older carriage house look. Start by scheduling a consultation so we can talk through sizes, layouts and finishes with you.
