Fire-Rated Door FAQs

What is fire door drop testing?

A drop test is a hands-on check that the fire door will close on its own when it needs to. The technician triggers the door's release the way a fire or alarm would, then watches it close fully. Afterward the door is checked and reset. The test shows problems that a quick visual look can miss, such as a sticking release or worn parts.

How often do fire-rated rolling doors need to be inspected and tested?

NFPA standards call for rolling fire doors to be inspected and drop tested at least once a year. Keeping a record of each test helps show that your doors are being maintained. Your fire marshal, insurance carrier or company safety policy may also ask to see those records. We provide annual drop testing to help you stay on schedule.

What do the UL and FM labels on a fire door mean?

The UL or FM label shows that the door assembly was tested and listed by an independent testing organization for its fire rating. Inspectors look for that label when they check your doors. Never paint over, cover or remove it. The fire-rated doors we provide carry UL or FM labels and are listed for both masonry and non-masonry walls.

What happens if my fire door fails its drop test?

A failed drop test means the door needs repair before it can be counted on in a fire. The door may close only partway, close too fast or not release at all. Our technicians can find the cause, make the repair and test the door again. We service all brands, so your door does not need to be one we installed.

How do I schedule a fire door inspection?

You can schedule a fire door inspection by calling (800) 962-3141, calling your nearest location, or using the Schedule Service form on our website. Let us know how many fire doors you have and when they were last tested. Fire door testing can also be included in our Preventative Maintenance Program so it stays on schedule.
