There are two main components to a garage door opener, the motor type, and the drive type.
Garage Door Opener Motor Types
There are two types of motors out there for garage door openers, AC and DC power. Garage door openers powered by an AC motor are typically louder, larger and heavier since they require more components. Garage door openers powered by a DC motor offer the most power and are the smoothest running motors in the industry. They are quieter and lighter and allow more features on the opener like soft start and stop which reduces wear and tear on the door and motor.
Garage Door Opener Drive Types
The drive type is simply the way your garage door travels along with the guide when it opens and closes. The guide is the long rail that is attached above the center of your door which connects to your opener. Within this guide is a screw, chain, or belt which moves the trolley along the guide to open and close your door.

If you have a large garage door measuring 14 ft. high or one-piece doors that are up to 8ft high, then these are the openers you’ll want to use. This is because our screw drive openers feature an exclusive direct drive system that transfers more power from the motor without using a gear reduction system. - Belt Drive — quiet and smooth performance. Ideal for garages adjacent to living areas. A belt drive garage door opener is super quiet. Our belt drive opener models are some of the quietest garage door openers you can buy. These openers are especially great for garages that are attached to the house. We’ve all heard what a noisy garage door opener sounds like, with a belt drive opener you’ll experience less sound and vibration when the opener is operating.
- Chain Drive — rugged and reliable. Suitable for most garage doors.
A chain drive garage door opener uses a chain to move the door open and closed. It’s suitable for most garage doors. Chain drive has been around for many years and will last a long time with routine maintenance. Chain drive openers are typically available at an opening price point.

To program the HomeLink® transceiver, some vehicles may require the ignition to be turned on or the vehicle to be running. For additional garage door opener help, view the HomeLink® programming instructions.
Overhead Door® openers and wall consoles integrates various technology. The technologies are known as Series I, Series II and Series III. Series II is backward compatible to Series I. Series III is not backward compatible without additional purchased parts. Contact your Overhead Door™ Distributor for further details. If the date code of your opener is 041217 or higher, you can use a Series II wall console with your opener. If not, you must use a Series I wall console for your opener.
